Not every MFA code stops an attacker
For security teams still relying on texted codes or basic MFA.
SIM swaps
Attackers move a phone number to their own SIM and receive the codes.
Fake login pages
A code typed into a phishing site works for the attacker too.
Uneven rollout
Some users and apps never get past the weakest factor.
Okta features, and how Iron Cove turns them on
We move users up the ladder: SMS, authenticator app, push with number matching, then phishing-resistant.
How we roll it out
Everyone enrolls before anything is enforced.
Design factor policy
Required factors per user group and app, documented and approved.
Run an enrollment campaign
User communications, a pilot group and deadlines before enforcement.
Retire SMS
A dated path to remove texted codes from daily sign-in.
What your team gets
For hardware keys, see FIDO2 authentication. To go fully passwordless, see Okta FastPass.
Compliance alignment
MFA mapped to NIST 800-63B levels.
Fewer prompts
Adaptive policy challenges users only when risk is higher.
Lower phishing exposure
Codes that can’t be reused on a fake login page.
Support after go-live
Okta Managed Services keeps policies tuned.
MFA questions
What IT and security leaders ask before they start.
What is a one-time password?
A temporary code that works for a single sign-in and expires quickly, usually as the second factor in MFA. It can come from an app, a text message or a hardware token.
Why move away from SMS codes?
Texted codes can be intercepted or stolen through SIM swapping. Authenticator apps and phishing-resistant factors close those gaps.
What does phishing-resistant mean?
The factor is bound to the real site and device, so it can’t be captured on a fake login page. Okta FastPass, passkeys and FIDO2 security keys work this way.
Does this help with compliance?
Yes. We map your MFA policy to NIST SP 800-63B assurance levels and use hardware-based factors where the highest level, AAL3, is required.
