Default policies leave you exposed
For teams with Adaptive MFA licensed but running it on defaults.
Yes-or-no MFA
Every login gets the same prompt, so users tune it out.
Unknown device health
Unpatched or unmanaged devices reach company apps.
Signals go unused
Location, behavior and endpoint data never drive a decision.
Adaptive MFA risk signals, and how we turn them on
Each risk signal Okta evaluates, mapped to a policy decision we build and test.
Okta’s device identity framework, in three stages
How we build device trust, from first login to continuous protection.
Onboard every device
Zero-touch provisioning, MDM attestation and Desktop MFA, with devices arriving enrolled.
Control access
Passwordless desktop login, hardware-bound credentials and posture checks on every request.
Protect continuously
Endpoint security signals in Okta, with session revocation and step-up rules.
What your team gets
Start with an Okta Best Practice Review if your tenant has not been audited recently.
Zero Trust in practice
Only healthy, known devices reach your apps.
Fewer prompts
Step-up only when risk changes.
Less IT load
Users fix device issues and recover factors themselves.
Support after go-live
Okta Managed Services keeps policies current.
Adaptive MFA questions
What IT and security leaders ask before they start.
What is Okta Adaptive MFA?
Adaptive MFA adds step-up authentication based on context: location and network changes, brute-force attempts, device posture and unusual behavior such as impossible travel.
What is Device Assurance?
A set of device checks Okta runs during sign-in, such as OS version and security patches. Devices that fall short see self-service steps to fix it before they get access.
Will this add more MFA prompts?
No. Adaptive policies usually mean fewer prompts, because trusted devices on trusted networks pass quietly and challenges appear only when risk changes.
Does it work on unmanaged devices?
Yes. Device Assurance can evaluate and nudge unmanaged devices even without MDM enrollment. We write separate rules for managed, unmanaged and BYOD devices.
