How to set up an app in Okta for SWA? Watch our video guide.
Setting up an Okta Secure Web Authentication (SWA) app involves a few key steps. SWA is used for applications that do not support federated single sign-on protocols like SAML or OpenID Connect but do require users to log in with a username and password.
Here’s how you can set up an Okta SWA app:
Step-by-Step Guide to Setting Up an Okta SWA App
1. Log in to the Okta Admin Console
- Navigate to your Okta organization's admin console.
- Log in with your administrator credentials.
2. Add a New Application
- In the Admin Console, go to the Applications section.
- Click on Applications in the left-hand navigation menu.
- Click the Add Application button.
3. Search for the Application
- In the Add Application screen, you can search for the application you want to add.
- If the application is listed in the Okta Integration Network, select it and click Add.
- If the application is not listed, you’ll need to create a custom SWA app.
4. Create a Custom SWA App
- To create a custom app, click on Create New App.
- In the Create a New Application Integration window, select Web as the Platform.
- Click Create.
5. Configure the SWA App
General Settings:
- App Name: Enter a name for the application.
- App Logo: Optionally, upload a logo for the app.
- App Visibility: Choose whether to display the application icon to users.
- Sign-On Settings:
- In the Sign-On Method section, select Secure Web Authentication (SWA).
- Login URL: Enter the URL where users will log in to the application.
- Credentials: Specify how credentials are managed (e.g., users enter their credentials directly into the SWA app, or credentials are set by the administrator).
6. Assign the Application to Users or Groups
Once the app is created, assign it to users or groups:
- Go to the Assignments tab.
- Click Assign and choose Assign to People or Assign to Groups.
- Select the users or groups you want to assign the app to and click Done.
7. Configure SWA Login Credentials
For each user assigned to the app, you may need to configure their login credentials:
- Users can enter their credentials directly into the Okta dashboard the first time they access the app.
- Alternatively, administrators can pre-set credentials for the users.
8. Test the Application
- Test the SWA app by logging in as a user who has been assigned the app.
- Ensure that the login credentials are captured correctly and that the user is logged into the application seamlessly.
Example Configuration
Let’s assume you want to set up a custom SWA app for an internal time tracking system:
- App Name: Time Tracker
- Login URL: https://timetracker.company.com/login
- Sign-On Method: Secure Web Authentication (SWA)
- Credentials: Users enter their credentials
After creating the app and assigning it to relevant users, you should:
- Inform users to access the new app through their Okta dashboard.
- Guide them on how to enter their credentials the first time they use the app, if needed.
Conclusion
By following these steps, you can set up a custom SWA app in Okta to securely manage access to web applications that require username and password authentication. Ensure you test the setup thoroughly and provide clear instructions to users for the best experience.
